On Tuesday we welcomed the inimitable Mia Salsjö to The Nest to present 'The Quietude', a composition created from the built form of The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Salsjö's practice is grounded in complex code-based systems, as a means of linking diverse media to an underlying linguistic system, straddling the boundary between conceptual artist and composer. Her composition process is rooted in illustrative graphic scores inspired by contemporary architectural works, and her works have been presented in galleries worldwide alongside the likes of Dr Christian Thompson AO.
Prior to each Phoenix sitting, Mia gave a talk about the basis of her work and her process as an artist, before 'The Quietude' was realised for the first time by a quintet of young accomplished musicians - Peter Clark (1st violin), Yena Choi (2nd violin), Meagan Turner (viola), Rachel Siu (cello) and Jaan Pallandi (double bass).
